Lesson 6 of 8 · 5 min

The step-jab

After this lesson: Land a jab from a step away by stepping in with it, without leaning.

When the jab falls short, the temptation is to reach: keep the feet where they are and lean the head out over the front knee. The jab is still short, the chin is out, and you're off balance.

Closing the distance is a job for your feet, not your arm.

Step in, don't reach

Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.

The step-jab

  • The front foot steps in as the jab goes out.
  • Foot and fist land together: the step puts your body's weight behind the punch.
  • The back foot follows the same distance as the hand comes home.
  • The head stays over your stance, never out past the front knee.
  • Then step back out, or keep punching from the new range.

Try it

In and out

  1. Step-jab in, step back out. Slowly, in front of a mirror or on a bag.
  2. Then follow the calls.
  3. Check the mirror: your head should never be further forward than your front knee.
