The jab
After this lesson: Throw a fast, straight jab that snaps back to your guard.

The jab is thrown with your lead hand, straight down the middle. It isn't your hardest punch, but it's the most important: it measures the distance, sets up everything else, and keeps your opponent busy and off you.
Watch it in slow motion, then turn the camera
Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.
The jab, step by step
- Throw it from where the glove already is: no pulling back first.
- Extend straight out from your chin. As the arm straightens, turn the fist over so your palm faces down when it lands.
- Your lead shoulder rises to cover your chin. Keep the chin tucked behind it.
- Your rear glove stays glued to your cheek.
- Snap it back along the same line, as fast as it went out, straight back into guard.
- Stepping in? Move the lead foot forward as the jab goes out: it covers distance and adds weight.
Rear hand stays home

The double jab: the first finds the range, the second lands
Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.
