After your combination

After this lesson: Get out of the way after every combination, with a step back or a pivot.

A 1-2 that lands on the gloves leaves you right in front of the opponent: in range, on their line. Standing there to admire it is the easiest counter in boxing. They take your punches on the gloves and fire straight back.

Move after you punch

✓ Do this

Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.

Two ways out

  • Exit 1, step out: back foot first, one step, out of range.
  • Exit 2, pivot: turn on your front foot, off their line, at an angle to punch from.
  • Move straight after the last punch, before they can answer.
  • Hands home first, then the feet.
  • Change your exits so they can't time them.
✓ Do this

Exit 2: the pivot

Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.

Try it

Punch, then move

  1. Shadowbox a 1-2, then an exit: step out, or pivot.
  2. Follow the calls.
  3. Last round: your own combinations, every one finished with an exit.

3 rounds · 1.5 min work · 30 s rest. Clear some space and turn the sound on.
