The most common footwork mistake in boxing is letting the feet come together. Moving forward, the back foot steps up first; moving back, the front foot does. For a moment your feet are side by side: no base, no balance, no power.
The step-drag fixes it, and every other move in this course is built on it.
Front foot first, not feet together

The rule
- The foot closest to where you're going moves first.
- Forward: the front foot steps, then the back foot follows the same distance.
- Back: the back foot steps, then the front foot follows the same distance.
- Small steps, pushing off the ball of the other foot. Glide; don't hop.
- After every step your stance looks exactly like it did before.
Going back: back foot first

Forward and back, at speed

Try it
Step-drag shuttles
- Ten steps forward, ten steps back, slowly. Check your stance after every step.
- Then follow the calls: move the way the coach says, one step-drag per word.
- Hands up and chin down the whole time.
