Side to side

After this lesson: Move to your lead side and your rear side without your feet ever crossing.

Moving sideways, it's natural to step across, the way you walk: the far foot swings over the near one. In boxing that puts both feet on one line, and for a moment there's no base at all.

Never cross your feet

✓ Do this

Animation: red glove is the lead hand, blue glove is the rear hand.

The rule, sideways

  • Towards your lead side (left, if you're orthodox): the front foot steps first, the back foot follows.
  • Towards your rear side (right, if you're orthodox): the back foot steps first, the front foot follows.
  • The feet never cross and never touch.
  • Each foot moves the same distance, so you land in the same stance.
  • Southpaw? The same rule: the foot closest to where you're going moves first.
