After this lesson: Turn off the line on your front foot instead of backing straight up.

When an opponent comes forward, the easy answer is to step straight back. But every step they take is as big as yours, so straight back only walks you into the ropes, still on the line their punches travel along.

The pivot takes you off that line without giving up any ground.

Pivot off the line, don't back into the ropes

✓ Do this

The pivot

  • Turn on the ball of your front foot: it stays where it is.
  • Swing your back foot round in an arc.
  • The whole stance turns with it, to face where the opponent now is.
  • Hands up and chin down as you turn: you're still in range.
  • Learn it both ways; turning away from the opponent's power hand is usually the safer one.

Pivots, both ways
