Hard sparring every week damages fighters more than it prepares them
Every hard round leaves a mark, knockdown or not. The research on repeated head impacts keeps pointing the same way, and more and more top gyms keep hard sparring rare and do most of their rounds light and technical.
Yet in plenty of gyms, "war Fridays" are still a badge of honour. The people who get hurt most in training are often the ones who never make it to a real fight, or who arrive already worn down.
My take: hard sparring should be the exception, near the peak of a fight camp, not a weekly ritual. You build skill with control, and you can't store up toughness by taking damage.
The counter-argument is real, though: if you never feel real pressure in the gym, the first time you feel it might be in front of a crowd.
How often does your gym spar hard? Has it made you better, or just more beaten up?
