You don't really know how to fight until you've competed
Training teaches you techniques. Competing teaches you whether you can use them with your adrenaline dumping, a stranger in front of you, and no coach to stop the round.
Plenty of people train for ten years and never find out. That's completely fine as a hobby, but I'd say it's a different thing from knowing how to fight.
The other side: competing is a young person's game, it costs time and health, and most people start training for fitness, confidence or fun. Is it fair to say they're missing something?
Have you competed? What did your first bout, match or tournament teach you that training never did?
