Uppercuts

After this lesson: Throw short uppercuts by driving up with your legs.

The uppercut travels upward, through the middle, under your opponent's guard. It's a close-range punch: perfect when they lean in or duck, risky from long range where it's slow and leaves you open.

The uppercut, step by step

  • Dip slightly towards the side of the punching hand, bending your knees.
  • Drive up with your legs and turn your hips: you stand up into the punch.
  • Palm faces you, elbow stays in front of your body, and the fist stops around chin height.
  • Keep the path short. Don't drop the hand to your waist first: the less they see, the better it lands.
  • The other glove stays on your cheek.
