A combination is punches strung together so that each one opens the door for the next. Coaches call them with numbers, so you react instantly instead of thinking about names.

The six punches, by number

  • 1Jab
  • 2Cross
  • 3Lead hook
  • 4Rear hook
  • 5Lead uppercut
  • 6Rear uppercut

Odd numbers are lead-hand punches (red glove), even numbers rear-hand (blue). Some gyms number uppercuts or body shots differently; the idea is the same.

How to throw combinations

  • Straight punches open the door, hooks and uppercuts walk through it.
  • Alternate hands: each punch turns your body so the next one is loaded (the cross turns you into the lead hook).
  • Every punch goes back to guard before (or as) the next one goes out.
  • Finish with defence or movement: slip, roll, step out or pivot. Don't stand in front admiring your work.
  • Slow and correct first, then faster. Speed without technique is just flailing.

Combo caller

  1. Stay in your stance, light on your feet. When a combination is called, throw it and come straight back to guard.
  2. Round 1 at 50% speed, round 2 at 75%, round 3 as sharp as you can with good technique.
  3. Breathe out on every punch.

3 rounds · 2 min work · 60 s rest. Clear some space and turn the sound on.
